Day 59 Tarrytown NY
We said good bye to the city that never sleeps - our former slip neighbors brought that fact home to us. The NY/NJ public transportation system is unbelievable., so we decided to try it out last night before we left the Big Apple and go to the World Trade Center Memorial. The eternity pools are so moving. One firefighter's name had a single carnation on it - such a loss, such a heartbreak. The Freedom Towers were under construction - you get dizzy looking up at the tallest one. John had "street meat" - ah, let me interpret that for my Floridians - that's a hot dog from a street vendor. We managed to find our way home before the rains came. We heard severe weather was moving in so we decided to only boat for about 4 hours to Tarrytown Marina in NY. This morning, there weren't many boats out except for a ton of ferries. They are like bees buzzing this way and that. After passing under the George Washington Bridge, the boat traffic stopped and a strong current hurried us north. The Hudson Valley is filled with history and natural beauty. The Cliffs on the Jersey side were majestic. Down at the waterline, we saw old ruins of an 1840's stone landing that was once the link between the city and NJ. This area has a campaign underway to save a lot of these ruins that are all along the river. Went under the Tappan Zee Bridge - it's hard to believe it is over 50 years old and they are going to destroy it after completing the new one under construction. After docking, we spent a couple hours walking around the village and nearby Sleepy Hollow. The rain was all north of us so we stopped just in time. Tried to find Washington Irving's Dutch church to no avail. The town library is old, bountiful and air conditioned so we spent some time there reading about the Hudson. This area is very hilly, so we got a workout before heading back to our boat. We had intentions of going back in the evening, but the storms are now hitting us so we may be delayed for awhile. The weather determines what we do tomorrow.
