Olympic National Park did not disappoint. Yesterday, Lake Crescent was tranquil and beautiful. Today Sol Duc’s old-growth trees, rainforest, waterfalls, cascades, and lush underbrush were magical. On our first hike of the day to the cascades, we marveled at the spectacular trees that reached towards the heavens. I half-expected a little wood fairy would fly out to greet us as we hiked the second trail under the dense canopy of green that meandered through the rainforest. After a moderately strenuous hike, we made it to the 3 prong gushing waterfall. The mist from the cascading water lent to the mystical atmosphere. We hiked a little farther and took our places on the boulders as if it were church. The psalm that says, “Be still”, came to mind and the river touched our souls. We finally tore ourselves away and drove another hour or so to Hurricane Ridge where we did short hikes to get better views of the majestic mountains of Olympic. The journey up to the parking lot that stood at 5,242 feet was breathtaking going up and down. Finished our day with a delectable local seafood dinner at the Dockside Restaurant in John Wayne’s Marina where not one, but two Gulfstar sailboats like our Mirage were moored. Tomorrow we head out early to catch the ferry in Port Townsend that will take us to Whidbey Island.
