Got off of Whidbey Island before all the tourists were up and about and pointed the truck towards the North Cascade Mountains. What a magnificent natural area of the country! I think it rivals Banff for majestic mountains and “wows” but with a lot less visitors. The drive was remarkable but we had to stop multiple times to hike and gaze at stunning overlooks. Washington Pass with its steep mountains are only accessible about half of the year at 5577’. The glaciers in the distance on Colonial Peak were breathtaking. We could view Gorge High Dam from the rocks which is one of several dams on the river. There were water falls and water cascading all over the Northern Cascades, hence their name. An impressive waterfall was at the Gorge Creek Falls topping at 242 feet. Since 1906 there were many attempts to designate the Cascades as a national park, but it wasn’t until Senator “Scoop” Jackson introduced a bill in 1968 that it became one. The excessive heat that’s been plaguing the south finally caught up to us; today the truck recorded 100° but it was very dry at only 17% humidity. Arrived at Pearrygin Lake State Park and set up at our full hook up site. Thank heavens this little camper has adequate a/c. Drove down to the nearby little western town of Winthrop that looked like it was designed by a cowboy who worked at Disney. Hit some shops and a brewery then back to the campsite to relax under a shade tree till sunset. Heyburn State Park is in our sights for tomorrow.
