Day 29 July 5

Transferred from our Harvest Host brewery to North Whidbey RV Park across Whidbey Island. First stop after setting up was Deception Pass Bridge. George Vancouver named this pass “Deception” in 1792 because it misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. The iconic 976 foot long bridge that connects Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island was completed in 1935. John, who is not a fan of high places or bridges, said “it was like walking between life and death”. The views from the narrow structure are breathtaking. Later we drove to the quaint seaside, historic town of Coupeville with its tiny shops and cafes. It is one of Washington’s oldest towns established in the 1850’s by farmers and sea captains. Main Street today doesn’t look very different from the old pictures from 1890. We finished our day at the unpretentious Secret Cove Restaurant in Anacortes dining on delicious Dungeness crab dishes where we were entertained by a seal, otters, hummingbirds and varies boats passing by. Tomorrow we explore more.
