Day 4 June 10

Thank goodness there was a Firestone Tire right down the road from our Cracker Barrel that opened at 7am. A kind manager got us right in and put a new tire on the truck and we were on our way to Independence, MO. The 3 1/2 hour drive was a lot of corn and wheat fields dotted with farm houses and silos. When we got to Independence, I misread the directions to the campground and we ended up in the middle of three phenomenal temples belonging to three different religious organizations: the Mormons, Church of Christ and the Community of Christ. These churches surround an area called the Temple Lot. This piece of land is very meaningful to religious groups because in 1831, a church leader said he had a revelation that a New Jerusalem was to be established on this spot. Churches and church buildings are all around the 63 acre area but nothing on this lot. Legend says this land was also important to ancient Native Americans. John circled the lot, got us turned around and we found our campground; it turns out the Church of Christ owns it. Through the trees, our site overlooks the Independence Temple which was built in 1990. The temple, a stainless steel spire that rises 300 feet, was designed by Gyo Obata and evokes the spiral shell of the Nautilus. It is an amazing structure. So I’m thinking this is the holiest place we’ve ever camped and we should sleep well tonight before heading to South Sioux City, NE.
