Anchored after a short boat ride today to Cumberland Island which is very near St. Marys. The island has a fascinating history that started with the Timucuan Indians, but it is most well known for the Carnegie's mansions and its wild horses. We busied ourselves through the hot part of the day and dinked over to the island around 4:30 when all the tour boats were gone. It's about a mile walk to the Dungeness ruins. As you approach the mansion, it's hard to believe that the family could have abandoned this massive fortress and all the surrounding buildings - the lifestyle they created. But they did in 1924 and the main home was burned by poachers in 1959. After her husband's death, Lucy raised her nine kids here because she thought the stress from his job and the city killed Thomas, the brother of Andrew, the steel magnate. The island is definitely peaceful and is now a very well maintained national park. The White House is the head caretakers home - not too shabby. Wildlife is abundant on the island. We saw coons, an armadillo, manatees, huge turkeys and herds of wild horses. Friday, we head for St. Simon's Island and our buddy, Gary.
