Day 79 The Lift Part 2

We have heard about the Lift Lock since we started the Trent Severn - today we got to experience it. As you approach, it looks like a midieval castle. The Peterborough Lift Lock was completed in 1904 and was considered an engineering marvel. You enter a very large pan and secure your boat. There are 2 pans that weigh 1300 tons when filled. One goes up as the other goes down. We passed a sight seeing boat as we went up. When it is time to lower one pan and raise the other, one extra foot of water is added. This extra weight allows the upper pan to push down and raise the lower pan to the top level. The two pans are locked in place and the extra water is let out of the lower pan. The lock took us up 64 feet. The view was beautiful and the experience was amazing. Then you exit out the other side and continue on your way. John says it's like an E ticket ride at Disney World. For those too young to remember when Disney had tickets, E ticket rides were the BEST.
