Day 79 Young's Point Lock 27 Part 1

Accomplished quite a bit today even though we got a late start. The concert was great last night. We are now MonkeyJunk fans. The lead singer had a set of lungs on him - he did 15 minute intervals on the "tin sandwich". We went through 8 locks, but only traveled 14 1/2 miles. That's a lot of work. We rode the famous Lift Lock 21. I'll write about that in part 2 - it is the Wonder of the Trent Severn along with the Shute at the end of the canal. Didn't have any problems on the locks - the weather was overcast most of the day, but no rain.  Met a family taking their new Hunter sailboat back to the Georgian Bay. John picked their brains through 5 locks and they even took our new charts and highlighted the best anchorages and "must see spots" in that area. You can't beat "local knowledge" when doing this trip. We docked at Young's Point Lock 27. This seems to be a big resort, family vacation spot. Small cottages with little pleasure boats line the waterway. This lock wall is very popular. - there's 8 other boats tied up here for the night. As soon as we hit land, we visited the famous  Lockside Trading Company for ice cream - haven't had any in so long and it tasted goooood. The building was originally the home of the Young family in the mid-1800's. They settled this area and were instrumental in getting the locks to this section of the river. In the background of picture 2, you can see a piece of the bridge built in 1884 that connected this area. It was one of the first built with steel and iron. As we walked across it, we marveled at what incredibly good shape it was still in. Fishermen abound here. Anywhere there is seawall or bridge, there's a person with a pole on it. Sandy and his girlfriend who are tied up next to us have caught at least 10 - sunfish, walleye, blue gill, rock bass, large mouth bass, and perch. Looks like they are going to have one hell of a fish fry. Now let me tell you about the Lift - part 2.
